Studies have shown that chiropractic treatment helps relieve head pain. Our doctor of chiropractic can help identify the cause of your head pain, offer a chiropractic adjustment to relieve pain, and provide advice to avoid future headaches.

Causes of head and neck pain

In the U.S., more than 15 percent of all adults complain about severe headaches or migraines, with women reporting pain twice as much as men (Source). More than 60 percent surveyed said their headaches could be brought on by stress.

Causes of headaches include external conditions like stress, smells, or weather conditions. People also experience them as part of other health conditions like depression, diabetes, and hypertension.

  • Secondary headaches are caused by an underlying condition.
  • Primary headaches are not caused by other concerns.

Many primary headaches, like tension aches and migraines, can be associated with muscle tension in the neck. Sedentary activities and fixed positions like sitting in your office chair increase joint irritation and muscle tension in your neck, upper back, and scalp and results in head pain.

Treatment for
your headaches

People deal with their headaches in different ways, and some solutions may not work for everyone.

Common headache relief methods include:

  • Sleep or darkening the room
  • Stress reduction
  • Over-the-counter medications

These treatments may be acceptable for episodic headaches that come up occasionally, but they may be tedious to implement all the time if you suffer from chronic head pain. This is where routine chiropractic care can make a difference.

Can a chiropractor help
with headaches?

Doctors of chiropractic receive extensive training to help their patients with body discomfort beyond just low-back pain. We know how tension in the spine relates to problems you experience in other parts of your body.

A chiropractor will perform a spinal adjustment to improve spinal function and alleviate the stress on your system. They can also provide advice on nutrition, posture, and relaxation techniques to help you manage head and neck pain.

Almost half of U.S. adults use over-the-counter medications to treat their head pain (Source). Chiropractic care offers a drug-free solution to chronic headaches.

Identify your type of pain

When it comes to managing your aches and pains, it is important to understand what might be causing them. Consider if your headache symptoms feel like a dull, throbbing pain or an intense, throbbing pain.

It may be a good idea to keep a journal and document your symptoms and factors that might be influencing your pain. You can share this info with your health care professional to find the best solution.

Tension Headaches

These types of aches start slowly and gradually and are often the result of stress or bad posture. They can last for minutes or days and are usually described as a dull ache on one or both sides of the head. A common cause for this pain is tension in the upper back and neck.

Chiropractors adjust the top cervical vertebrae so that they return to normal motion or position and no longer send pain signals.

Migraines

Migraines are intense and throbbing aches that are associated with nausea and sensitivity to light or noise. These head pains are caused by constriction and then dilation of the blood vessels in the brain. The decrease in blood flow and then a rapid increase of blood pressure in the head lead to a pounding ache.

Cluster Headaches

Similar to migraines when it comes to what causes them, cluster headaches are shorter in duration and usually felt on one side of the head behind the eyes. They occur in clusters like one to four times a day for several days.

How to avoid head pain

There are a number of measures you can take to help reduce headaches. A most effective one is giving your body a break from fixed positions like sitting at a desk, driving, reading, etc. Stretch every 30 minutes to an hour to give your head and neck a break.

Other suggestions to reduce headaches include:

  • Low-impact exercise
  • Drink more water during the day
  • Minimize stress
  • Adjust your sleeping position

You may find pain relief at the dentist if you clench your jaw. Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) symptom leads to tension headaches and can often be treated with a mouth guard.
